Belle and Sebastian remind us of when we were ‘Young and Stupid’

The middle of April is usually Belle and Sebastian season, if only for that one friend we all have that posts “Legal Man” to social media and urges us all to get out of the office and into the springtime. But that sentiment has lost a bit of its impact in the age of Work From Home, so instead of busting out of our old stuffy office cubicles for a bit of that cool fresh air, we shall instead look back fondly upon a time when we were “Young and Stupid.” Which, coincidentally, is right around the time “Legal Man” came out 22 years ago.

Anyway, “Young and Stupid”, the new Belle and Sebastian single and the latest to be featured from the forthcoming album A Bit Of Previous, out May 6, has a real familiar quality to it. We don’t know what it’s about, other than reminiscing about a time when it ruled to be “Young and Stupid,” with some leaning into the latter more than the former back then, but Stuart Murdoch has apparently enlisted Jon Hamm, of all folx, to supply a quote for the track.

“In 2015 at Bonnaroo, Belle and Sebastian invited Zach Galifianakis and me up to the stage during their set to toss gummy bears in each other’s mouths,” Hamm says. “Then Stuart got into the fun and demanded a catch as well. It was dramatic, stupid, and done with style and grace. I know I can speak for Zach when I say ‘I want to thank them for their inclusion of us into their show’. I know the audience was simply confused, but we were absolutely delighted. Please enjoy this new album with a gummy bear of your choice, and think fondly of all of us.”

Well alright! Take it out of the office below, especially if you work at Sterling Cooper, and catch Belle and Sebastian when they play Roadrunner in Boston on June 18.
