This is not a drill: Charli XCX’s new album Crash is out next week (March 18, yowza), and we may or may not be emotionally ready. Over the past several months we’ve been blessed with a string of sterling dance-minded singles from the LP — read all our hits — but over the weekend, our angelic alt-pop giver brought the goods to Saturday Night Live, where she delivered fevered renditions of “Beg For You” and recent banger “Baby.” Hell, just watching host Oscar Isaac introduce her is worth the price of admission.
Charli also showed up in one of the sketches, as a singing and keytar-wielding meatball lodged in an armpit (that’s some sentence; just watch it below), proving there’s literally nothing she can’t do. Both SNL performances have some lowkey goth-pop aesthetics that feel a bit like a modernized call-back to her early Nuclear Seasons era, and well, we are certainly here for it — and will be dressed appropriately when she smokes Boston’s House of Blues on April 20.
As Charli tweeted post-performance early yesterday morning: “holy shit just did snl gonna pass out now ahhhhhh”. Same, girl, same.
