It’s pretty amusing to us that Hulu/Zombie Searchlight/The Walt Disney Company waited until the day after Valentine’s Day to release the first trailer for Mimi Cave’s Sundance hit Fresh, which seems like a slam-dunk as far as marketing is concerned: You’ve got the lonely hearts out there looking for connection, all of whom probably could stand a reminder that hey, things could be MUCH worse. But we imagine the Super Bowl had something to do with that, especially given that it took place in L.A. this year and three quarters of Hollywood was getting lit off of some Bud Lights either in the stadium itself or from the comfort of their homes On the other hand, if we had a great Sebastian Stan performance like this one in our movie, we’d be screaming it from the rooftops as soon as we could, hangover or not.
Peep it:
In lieu of a decent official synopsis from Hulu, here’s what the programmers at Sundance said about the film back at its premiere in January (or, God forbid, you just read our review from the festival instead):
“Frustrated by scrolling dating apps only to end up on lame, tedious dates, Noa takes a chance by giving her number to the awkwardly charming Steve after a produce-section meet-cute at the grocery store. During a subsequent date at a local bar, sassy banter gives way to a chemistry-laden hookup, and a smitten Noa dares to hope that she might have actually found a real connection with the dashing cosmetic surgeon. She accepts Steve’s invitation to an impromptu weekend getaway, only to find that her new paramour has been hiding some unusual appetites.”
Fresh will be served up to Hulu subscribers on March 4. Again, pretty weird that another vaguely scandalous indie acquired by Disney is going straight to streaming, and we can tell you that this would probably kick some serious ass with a crowd, so it’s a little disappointing. But, hey, at least you get to see it soon!
