Kavinsky reaches for another cinematic electronic-pop peak on ‘Zenith’

If we spent all of last year bowing to the 10th anniversary of the Drive soundtrack, we might have missed that one of its chief contributors, Kavinsky — who issued the iconic “Nightcall,” which a decade later still sounds like the future of electro — quietly blessed us with new music, his first in nine years. While October’s “Renegade,” featuring Cautious Clay, veered close to Weeknd disco territory, the French musician, producer, DJ returns today (February 4) with a sultry coastal midnight cruise called “Zenith.”

The arrival of this new Kavinsky track launches the pre-order for his new album, Reborn, out March 25 via Fiction/Virgin Music France. It also marks Kavinsky’s first album in nine years, and “Zenith,” with its male/female call-and-response vocals, played here by Prudence (The Dø) and Morgan Phalen (Justice, Diamond Nights), is envisioned as the sequel to “Nightcall.” There’s even some saxophone.

“Zenith,” with its instrumental version and radio edit, make for a compelling cinematic listening experience. We may never be flying over the Los Angeles skyline at night like we did when we were young and drenched in neon, but we still have that itch to go live out the fantasy life that awaits us on the other side of wherever we find ourselves today. As usual Kavinsky gives us the soundtrack.
