If there’s a greater common mood for 2022, Little Boots may have just captured it in song. The celebrated British artist, songwriter, producer and DJ born Victoria Hesketh has today (January 21) dropped a bittersweet synth-pop ballad called “Crying on the Inside.” The particularly choice lyric comes right from the melancholic chorus: “I put my favorite record on cuz I’m crying on the inside / I’m dancing like there’s nothing wrong but I’m crying on the inside.”

This new one, the latest blast of pop brilliance from Little Boots, in a run that began over a a decade ago, will be featured on her forthcoming self-produced album, Tomorrow’s Yesterday, out March 18. It follows previous singles “Silver Balloons” and “Landline”, and rest assured we were all over those too.

“”Crying on the Inside” is about putting on a brave face when running into personal challenges; something I think we can all relate to, especially in the last year or so,” says Little Boots. “I personally love when songs reference other songs or records, which this does. I actually wrote the song some time ago with Carly Rae Jepsen in mind, but she didn’t take it and the track has always been one of my favorites as one that I personally relate to.”

She adds: “I shared the original demo with my Patreon channel, and everyone really encouraged me to re-record it for myself and put it on the new album. I tried to channel a bit of a Fleetwood Mac ‘Dreams’ vibe, but ultimately I think it’s just a classic happy-sad pop song.”

Fight back the tears and take it for a spin.
