Back in September, Sam Short posted a snippet of her new single “Already Mine” to TikTok, giving a special preview to her friend who inspired it. The two were sitting in a Short’s car, and the Oregon-born, Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter let the song — about supporting her friend through a bad breakup — do the talking.
The sentimental clip popped off, and since then so has Short, amassing more than 265,000 TikTok followers and racking up over 30 million video views in just a few months. Yesterday (January 6), “Already Mine” hit the streams, and the glowing alt-pop bop should elevate Short even higher.
“I think the best storytellers are masters of empathy,” Short says. “Whether they are referring to a lover, a friend, a stranger, or themselves, I believe the best songwriters not only possess the ability to empathize, but also have the desire to understand the human condition so deeply that it informs their art.”
Short wrote on Insta this week that when she penned “Already Mine,” she was convinced no one would ever care about her music. That’s just simply not the case, apparently, and in a year that could be defined by sadness, we’re here for this uplifting tale of empathy and friendship.
