There’s something poetic about releasing a new single called “Change Your Mind” in mid-December, a time when most outlets and platforms are busy crafting their Year in Review features. But the latest effort from Welsh post-punk outfit Plastic Estate isn’t too bothered with convincing minds already made up; the glistening new single, out today (December 17), is more concerned with an independent path forged ahead.
“Change Your Mind,” which boasts a modern-rock glow in an overcast fog of dark-pop, is the follow-up to last month’s “Divinely Impaired” and the latest from Plastic Estate’s anticipated self-titled debut album, out February 4 via AVANT! Records. They’re looking back and ahead all at once.
“’Change Your Mind’ is the oldest song on the album, and has evolved with us, taking on various manifestations as our tastes have changed,” say Plastic Estate. “We usually write the songs in full then bring them to a rehearsal space, but this was a rare case where a few of the parts were added or changed when we were preparing to play it live. A slightly backwards approach for us that seemed to pay off!”
They add: “The song is essentially about avoiding over-reliance on a partner; it’s not hyper-conceptual but definitely what I was feeling at the time. I like to think of it as an ironic look at Bryan Adams’ ‘Heaven’.“
