The Weeknd’s scintillating pop hit “Blinding Lights” is remarkable on so many levels. Not only is it perhaps the greatest synthwave song ever written (don’t @ us), but it’s the type of musical gold that likely sounds fantastic rendered in any style or genre, its infectious songwriting allowing it to be interpreted and reworked without losing any of its original appeal.
Hard rock supergroup Saint Asonia have put that last part to the test, and it checks the fuck out. The Canadian band, which features former Three Days Grace frontman Adam Gontier and Staind guitarist/founding member Mike Mushok, dropped the cover today (November 18), and it absolutely kills.
“It’s always interesting deciding on a song to cover,” says Gontier. “In this case, I just wanted to do something that people wouldn’t necessarily expect. I mean, any way you look at it, ‘Blinding Lights’ is a great song. It was fun to give it our flavor, and add our style to it. Also, both we and The Weeknd are Canadian, specifically from the Toronto area, so that made it even sweeter. We’re all pumped with how it turned out. It hits hard.”
Sure does.
Saint Asonia dropped sophomore album Flawed Design via Spinefarm Records back in 2019, so new music could be on the way as early as next year. Stay tuned, and fire up their “Blinding Lights” cover below.
