IFFBoston Preview Part I: Southern criminals, teenage soldiers, absurdist suburbanites

If you're a Boston-baserd cinephile, this is undoubtedly one of the most exciting times of the year for you, as the Independent Film Festival Boston has returned with one of their strongest line-ups ever. Running from April 24 through May 1 at the Brattle, Somerville and Coolidge Corner Theatres, there's so many great movies showing at this year's Festival that we've had to split our preview up into three parts. Check back soon for our second and third pieces about this year's lineup, but for now, here are some choice cuts from the first three days of the festival's programming. Tickets and more information are available at the IFFBoston website.

Sword of Trust

Friday, April 26 at 8 p.m. at the Somerville Theatre

Hot off of its premiere last month at SXSW, Laggies director Lynn Shelton’s latest is sure to make you laugh and cry with equal measure. It’s about two women (Jillian Bell and Michaela Watkins) who decide to sell the only item that they received as inheritance from one of their grandfathers. Simple enough premise, right? Well, it turns out that Grandpa believed that this sword proved that the South won the Civil War, and the two manage to convince a scummy pawn shop owner (Marc Maron) to help them put it on the black market. Shelton is a very funny filmmaker who looks to be expanding her purview with this conspiracy theory comedy, and it’s exciting to see her take a big step in that direction.
