KOLARS trample your radio dial with glam garage single ‘Turn It Up’

Via Artist

When given a few minutes, KOLARS can tap dance over any beat the same way that their alt-rock tramples otherwise wishy-washy indie.

Part husband/wife duo, part tap shoe/drum kit fusion, the Los Angeles-based band revolves around the art of the stomp — literally. While former Lexington rez Lauren Brown mans both her stand-up kit and shuffles over her bass drum and hi-hats, partner Rob Kolar layers her rumble with guitar licks and vocals, minimalist-style. “Turn It Up,” one of their new singles for 2019, frames their full dynamic with glam garage perfection; still, the presentation here can’t be overlooked, especially when it’s been almost a decade in the making.

“It’s been a 9 year process,” Brown says of her drum-tapping techniques. “It began when the drummer of our other band quit, and we thought combining the tap dancing and drumming into one person was a smart business decision, haha. I’m still figuring more out day by day, but that’s what makes it fun.”

The spectacle rolls into Cambridge tonight (April 17) with Calliope Musicals at the Middle East Upstairs.
