Our Film Editor Nick Johnston just landed in Salt Lake City a few hours ago to cover the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, armed with a few dozen movies he’s eager to view and review. But we might send him on a music assignment to cover The Dumes while he’s busy frolicking into the Utah snow. The Los Angeles guitar-rock band have built a nice buzz this week with the release of debut single “More Than Physical,” and suddenly their two Friday gigs at Sundance (2 p.m. on the ASCAP Stage and 6:30 p.m. on the Acura Stage) jump out like all the other film premieres.
The Dumes are no stranger to the Utah terrain, as singer Elodie Tomlinson (a music teacher by day, and formerly of L.A. electro-pop group Sibling) was an accomplished five-time championship snowboarder in the Beehive State. But music has been a calling taking her to other great heights, launching The Dumes after meeting co-producer and collaborator Nick Schlike last year at a party for ASCAP.
“More Than Physical” is a yearning fit of sophisticated and weathered indie rock, and Tomlinson says this of the track: “That feeling you get when a friend starts feeling like more than a friend. That’s what ‘More Than Physical’ is about. Something you want to run away from but can’t.”
That certainly has a cinematic ring to it.
