Since its maiden voyage nine years ago, the goal of the Women in Comedy Festival has been to close the gender gap in the comedy industry and represent the women who have worked tirelessly to remind us that comedy certainly is not a man’s game.
Celebrating its 10th annual installment this year, which takes place in different venues around the Boston area from May 2 to 5, the WiCF has curated yet another powerful lineup that showcases both women and their allies in the scene — and it means that The Wilbur Theatre is going to be busy.
Following a press release last week announcing that Boston native Frankie Shaw (creator, director, writer and star of Showtime’s SMILF) would be hosting a Comedy Short film challenge as part of the weekend’s film festival, news of the festival’s stand-up headliners dropped today (January 22) with Phoebe Robinson (HBO’s 2 Dope Queens), Nikki Glaser (Comedy Central’s Not Safe w/ Nikki Glaser) and improv team Wild Horses (a comedy quartet comprised of Stephanie Allynne of Amazon’s One Mississippi, Mary Holland of Starz’ Blunt Talk, Lauren Lapkus of Netflix’s Orange is the New Black and Jurassic World, and Erin Whitehead of HBO’s Animals) leading the way on Tremont Street.
Obviously, more names are sure to be announced in the coming weeks, with names both national and local filling out the rest of the weekend, but with this announcement alone, the decade-mark of this ground-breaking festival is already shaping up to be a very special occasion.
