Year in ReView: Vanyaland’s favorite stand-up comedy specials of 2018

It was a year when few wanted to leave the house; but as Jason Greenough notes, we didn't need to

There’s no denying that it’s been tough finding the gumption to laugh in 2018. From what feels like 39 months that filled the calendar and made for a dragging year, to the more obvious state of affairs around the world that are being pasted on every screen we look at every day, from every angle -- this year has been exhausting, and and not super heavy on the chuckle scale in the grand scheme of things.

But at least 10 comedians tried their damndest to make us smile in the midst of chaos this year, and many have helped us make sense of our own feelings toward the events taking place around us. We’ve compiled a list of comedians who accomplished those tasks in the best ways, and have, in turn, cemented, or continued to cement their legacies as masters of the craft. These are our favorite stand-up comedy specials from the past 12 months.

Dan Cummins, Maybe I’m The Problem

It seems as if stand-up is less of an art form, and more of a means of therapy for Dan Cummins, and Maybe I’m The Problem is his most needed session yet. Admittedly “aggressively hateful,” Cummins utilized his newest recorded hour to eviscerate various aspects of the human race that piss him off to the point of going down a rabbit hole detailing the thought process of Chuck E. Cheese, or the “Humanoid rat God,” as he refers to him. Not only does he fill the hour with the awkward encounters involved in raising a teenage son and the feeling he gets when he sees his kids’ giant step dad, but he also delves into the rationale for his hilariously nihilistic viewpoint on the world by pointing out the dumb behavior exhibited by senior citizens, and the ever-infuriating act of driving. The most interesting aspect of Cummins’ delivery is how he remains relatable, and helping us realize that since many of us have had the same thoughts, that maybe we aren’t all as cheery as we think we are.
