Year in ReView: Vanyaland’s favorite stand-up comedy specials of 2018

It was a year when few wanted to leave the house; but as Jason Greenough notes, we didn't need to

There’s no denying that it’s been tough finding the gumption to laugh in 2018. From what feels like 39 months that filled the calendar and made for a dragging year, to the more obvious state of affairs around the world that are being pasted on every screen we look at every day, from every angle -- this year has been exhausting, and and not super heavy on the chuckle scale in the grand scheme of things.

But at least 10 comedians tried their damndest to make us smile in the midst of chaos this year, and many have helped us make sense of our own feelings toward the events taking place around us. We’ve compiled a list of comedians who accomplished those tasks in the best ways, and have, in turn, cemented, or continued to cement their legacies as masters of the craft. These are our favorite stand-up comedy specials from the past 12 months.

Mo Amer, The Vagabond

From the moment Mo Amer shouts “It’s too late for you, motherfuckers! Get the door, Aziz!” in the opening minutes of his debut Netflix special The Vagabond, it’s obvious that the next hour would hold something bold, and it certainly did. Detailing what it’s like to be an immigrant and growing up in Houston, while being from Kuwait, the different perspective of how he’s gone about his life in America is what makes Amer’s debut effort so exceptional. With his light-hearted (and quite on-point) impressions of different nationalities while avoiding any racially-charged lines, and his telling of being mistaken for a Mexican gang member when he was in high school, to the viral photo of him seated next to Eric Trump on an airplane after his flight was upgraded and the troubles that come with traveling without a Kuwaiti passport, Amer knows no chill in his approach to delivering one of the best stand-up specials of the year. If 2019 doesn’t harbor big things for Mo Amer, there will be hell to pay!
