So we’ve been hearing bits and pieces about Richard Linklater’s Where’d You Go, Bernadette — you know, based on the novel by Maria Semple that every mom in America read back in 2014 — for the last two or three years, with some thinking that it’d premiere at last year’s Sundance Film Festival. A year-long wait for any information ensued, but that wait ended on Tuesday, when the fledgling Annapurna Pictures dropped a trailer for the film, which will presumably be tied to one of their Christmas Day releases (Vice or If Beale Street Could Talk). It looks… kind of interesting, we guess? Anyways, you should see it for yourself before we get all judge-y about it.
Take a look:
Well, that’s certainly a trailer for some spring counter-programming if we’ve ever seen one! Seriously, this only somewhat looks like a Linklater film, especially after his last couple of films, but we’re always going to give him and Cate fucking Blanchett our time and attention. On the financial side, this seems like kind of a big bet for Annapurna — that the name-brand recognition will be enough to get butts in seats when they could see a Tom Hanks submarine movie — and we’re not totally sure it will work. But who really gives a damn about all of that?
Here’s a synopsis:
“‘Where’d You Go, Bernadette’ is based on the runaway bestseller about Bernadette Fox, a Seattle woman who had it all — a loving husband and a brilliant daughter. When she unexpectedly disappears, her family sets off on an exciting adventure to solve the mystery of where she might have gone.”
Where’d You Go, Bernadette hits theaters on March 22, and we’re willing to bet a decent amount of Monopoly money that this will be shown in some capacity at SXSW this year. Well, that is if Annapurna still exists after all of their mounting troubles.
