‘Dark Phoenix’ Trailer: Is this the end for the X-Men?

Dark Phoenix

Hot on the heels of some footage leaking online, Fox dropped the first trailer for the new X-Men film, Dark Phoenix on James Corden early Thursday morning. This may very well be the last installment of the X-Men movies as we’ve grown to know them — along with Blade, it’s the first modern-day superhero franchise — and it’s only a sign of how badly they’ve fucked up this franchise that fans are begging for the studio’s sale to Disney to go through so that new creatives can work with these characters.

Peep it:

Yeah, this doesn’t look very good. We want to be excited for this — if you’ve ever been around a comic-book nerd, they’re sure to have gushed to you about how great this Uncanny X-Men storyline was back in the day — but a whole confluence of factors are keeping us from that. The leads are still uninspiring aside from Fassbender and McAvoy, the villains are ill-defined and pointless, and shot after shot of the cast glowering might get DC fans off but it isn’t doing much for us here. Maybe we’re wrong — and we hope we are — but it might be time to put this iteration to bed.

Here’s a synopsis:

“In ‘Dark Phoenix’, the X-Men face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.”

Dark Phoenix wants that Deadpool cash, so it will hit theaters on February 14, 2019.
