With everyone from Suede to Christine and the Queens unveiling albums this past Friday, the day was slightly overwhelming in the arena of new music releases. So you’re slightly forgiven if Just A Little More, the latest EP from the Bay Area’s Ellisa Sun, slipped past your radar.
Luckily, Sun and her seven-piece band bring the record — as well as her soul and jazz pedigree — to The Midway Cafe in Jamaica Plain tonight (September 24) for the official Boston-area release party. Just A Little More is a genre-flaunting spin around the neighborhoods of pop, jazz, soul, and R&B, and it allows Sun to bridge the worlds between Amy Winehouse and Sara Bareilles.
“My band and I have a chemistry that only comes once in a lifetime,” Sun says. “And in the Bay Area, where everyone is hustling to make rent and juggle 10 different jobs at once, it’s hard to keep everyone together to focus on a project. That’s why I am so excited about this EP: All of us put our heart and soul into it simply for the love of the music.”
And this is no front. Sun and her band self-produced Just A Little More, and now they’re living their life on the road, as she and her partner, percussionist Ken Michienzi, purchased an 30-foot RV to not only call home, but to take their sounds to the people — like us, roughly 2,684 miles away.
