Every now and then an opportunity will present itself around Boston where a person can catch a massive British band play a rather intimate club show. Think Manic Street Preachers at The Sinclair, or Kasabian at Royale — oftentimes Brits will even fly in for the gig, knowing damn well such shows in cozy venues across the Atlantic are never gonna happen. But there may be no greater discrepancy in crowd size between shows than what Slaves are about to experience. The punk duo from south of London just played Reading Festival on Sunday (August 26) in front of roughly 75,000 people — watch a BBC Music clip of them performing new track “Chokehold” below — and on October 2 arrive in our town to play O’Brien’s Pub. The Allston venue has a listed capacity of 70, so it’ll be quite a change. Word is that Slaves requested specifically to play O’Brien’s on this tour through North America, so this is certainly no perceived slight — the band deliver quite a live show no matter how many people are staring back at them.
