Gone (Tom) Cruisin’: ‘Top Gun 2’ adds Jon Hamm and Ed Harris

Top Gun

As the summer starts to cool down, Top Gun 2 is only getting hotter and hotter. The Hollywood Reporter announced earlier on Thursday that a few new actors are joining stars Tom Cruise and Miles Teller in the Danger Zone — Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, and Lewis Pullman (son of Bill). The article goes to great lengths to point out that these roles are under strict secrecy, and we honestly have no clue who any of these men could be playing, aside from them probably having something to do with the Air Force.

Still, this is all very stimulating. We love Hamm, and even as we insist that it’s the quality of the role that matters and not its size, we’re really happy that he’s going to bring some much needed depth to a hopefully substantial role here. He’s a huge star, sure, and we’re excited to see every inch of him captured for posterity. Harris is pretty damn great, too, though we’re a bit curious if he’ll be joining in on the volleyball fun or not. That’s not an issue — we just hope he wears extra sunscreen. Skin cancer ain’t nothing to scoff at.

Hamm, Harris and Pullman join a thick and meaty cast, featuring the aforementioned Cruise and Teller, as well as returning American Hero Val Kilmer, Jennifer Connelly and Glen Powell, and this is one gang that is sure to bang when this hits the big screen next year. Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy, Oblivion) directs, and will hopefully bring his skilled cinematic eye to the proceedings, preserving each and every pectoral muscle for all time (in all seriousness, we think he’s a pretty good choice to replace the tragically gone Tony Scott, and we really hope he doesn’t tarnish the man’s legacy).

Top Gun: Maverick, AKA Top Gun 2, hits theaters on July 12, 2019.
