The most devastating Boston loss in recent memory wasn’t the Patriots dropping Super Bowl LII to the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this year, it was the relocation of pop duo Sleeping Lion to Los Angeles. Following in the electronic-pop tradition kick-started a decade ago by bands like Passion Pit and Yes Giantess, Sleeping Lion’s uber-polished brand of smart, infectious pop seemed poised to help shape our city’s scene and inspire those who came next.
Luckily, the internet has a way of keeping us al connected, and though Nate Flaks and Noah Longworth McGuire now call LA home, we do still feel some creative connection to the duo. Today (August 17), Sleeping Lion return with a slick new track called “How We Know”, which takes that late-’00s Boston electro-pop bounce and filters it through glossy Los Angeles-style production. The exuberant track features vocals from West Coaster Cass Miller.
Naturally, the song is sourced in connection.
Here’s how it came together: “Sleeping Lion’s Nate Flaks started performing around LA with featured vocalist, Cass Miller, after responding to her Instagram story inquiring about keyboardists. From there, they would meet for writing sessions & send their new ideas to Noah Longworth McGuire (the other half of Sleeping Lion) who was across the country in Boston. ‘How We Know’ was born from those sessions as everyone involved felt connected to the heartfelt authenticity of the song.”
The track was also mixed and mastered by Eric Bard (Lido/Jaden Smith), and it showcases another step forward for this exciting young duo. Listen to “How We Know” below.
