Over the weekend Sky Ferreira revealed she had been locked out of her Soundcloud account, a result of her being forced to hand over the page to her record label after her album was released. That issue seems to have been resolved, because the alt-pop luminary not only once again has access to her Soundcloud’s back-end, but she delivered quite a treat to celebrate this newfound control: A cover of ‘Til Tuesday’s new wave classic “Voices Carry.”
The recording is billed as an “infant demo,” as it’s not produced nor mixed — but it allows fans to hear what Ferreira has been performing during recent live gigs.
“It’s always been one of my favorite songs but it’s kind of deeply personal to me, lyrically,” Ferreira says of the Aimee Mann composition. “I recorded this in one day when a engineer had a room at Sunset Sound available. He let me use the studio for free as a favor, some of my friends came in and played the bass/guitar/drums for me after calling them 45 minutes before asking if they could try playing random stuff for me to work with/write on. Nobody has produced it (except me… I guess but this version isn’t produced or mixed. It also doesn’t have the synths & guitars I added today…).”
Ferreira says she’s unsure how it will sound on our speakers, but it sounds good to us. And you can only imagine the very specific people she has in her head when she’s singing these very pointed lyrics.
“This is what I call the infant demo because it’s basically the scratch demo since it hasn’t really been worked on & what not,” she adds. “It’s also the only thing I can post without getting in trouble by other people involved on other songs. I promise I will be posting a lot more stuff on here & will let you know more about my album. I always feel a lot more comfortable sharing music related things here instead of Instagram etc.”
Ferreira’s long-awaited sophomore album, the follow-up to 2013 Night Time, My Time that the artist herself says is titled Masochism, will hopefully see the light of day soon.
