Studio 52 Spotlight: Settler

What Studio 52 Says: Worcester-based emo-punk band Settler have a multitude of releases under their belt, but their newest LP, April’s Dark Heavens, might be their crowning achievement. The first side of the album is quintessential old-school emo, filled to the brim with maudlin tempos and melodies. After intermission track “—–” the remainder of the album shifts into a different gear; the songs claw deeper into your brain and latch on to elicit more substantial feelings with their somber tone. They’re dispiriting but somewhat hopeful — Dark Heavens is definitely an appropriate title for the album because the concluding title track shows there’s always light piercing the bleakness. Settler are still busy pumping out new music including releasing a new jammer “big sky” last month and a spot on the Built to Spill cover compilation Built to Be Re-Done. You can catch them tonight (July 20) at O’Brien’s Pub in Allston with Save Ends (a 2017 Studio 52 featured band!), Laureate, and I Wish I Could Skateboard. — Andrew Maroney, Studio 52
