Idris Elba to be paper in The Rock’s ‘Fast and Furious’ spin-off

Even though the Fast and Furious spin-off Hobbs and Shaw continues to tear apart the family-centric franchise, we have to admit that we’re pretty pumped for it. Deadpool 2’s David Leitch is directing, it’s got The Rock and Jason Statham in the lead roles, and, as Variety announced earlier on Thursday, Idris Elba is joining the film as its villain.

This, of course, is a cause for celebration.

For one, we can’t think of a single project in the works at the moment that’s more primed for ‘shipping on Tumblr than this one is, and we’re already imagining the oceans of digital ink being spilled by fans of all shapes and sizes gearing up to write fan fiction about the trio. Secondly, we’re excited Elba’s turning heel again after a 2017 that largely saw him play the hero (or as close to it as you’ll get in an Aaron Sorkin screenplay). We liked him a lot in Star Trek Beyond even though he was under pounds and pounds of prosthetics, and his voice is certainly well-suited for the kind of growling required to intimidate people like Statham and Rocky Maivia.

Anyways, we’re pretty stoked to see how Hobbs and Shaw turns out when it hits theaters on July 26, 2019. We can already smell what the Rock and company are cooking up, and it smells pretty damn great.
