Belly have experienced a rebirth. The reunited New England alt-rock band returned to glory this month with new album Dove, their first in 25 years. On Saturday (May 25), they showed off their shimmering singles new and familiar at Boston Calling, and a few hours later, Tanya Donelly, Gail Greenwood, and Tom Gorman took the time to chat with us right after a pop-up record signing at the Newbury Comics tent. We asked them about the reunion, their decades-old chemistry, and what local band, from today or yesterday, they’d want to see at Boston Calling (spoiler: The Neats and Mission of Burma were suggested). Oh, we also asked them about that rapper named Belly (sorry!) and in the name of recent single “Shiny One,” just what their own personal favorite shiny things are. Their answer may or may not have been Greenwood’s hair. Hit play below to find out for sure. Featured image by Matthew Shelter for Vanyaland, from Belly’s Boston Calling performance.
