Kendrick Lamar has been named the 2018 winner for the Pulitzer Prize in Music for his 2017 album DAMN., making history as the first non-jazz or classical music artist to win the award.
A brief statement on the Pulitzer Prizes’ website describes the album as a “virtuosic song collection unified by its vernacular authenticity and rhythmic dynamism that offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life.”
Alongside a Grammy for Best Rap Album (2018), a BET Hip Hop Award, and an American Music Award, DAMN. remains one of Lamar’s greatest successes to date.
Lamar has not commented on the win as of press time.
