On her sophomore EP, alt-R&B singer Kenza is out to bring some rhythm to the deadbeat dregs of the far corners of the U.S. Unfolding a Fear and Loathing-worthy roadmap, Dixie & The Dead States traces zip codes from Florida to Vegas and San Pedro with a certain sedated swagger, blissed-out like a top-down cruise down the interstate. The crooner describes the journey as “the departure of the hard-headed youth in the passenger seat of your dad’s Volkswagen, re-birthed as the erratic driver now behind the wheel,” ultimately a metaphor for parsing through her disillusioned state of mind. Call it the new kind of “boulevard of broken dreams.”
