On a frigid night back in January, we received this private message via the magic of the internet: “Ed Balloon with one the greatest debut sets at Great Scott ever right now.” We won’t reveal who sent it, because that’s not important; but the sentiment surely is, and we’re using that declaration to anchor this post, which serves as a signal boost to Ed’s Lysten Boston + Xperience Creative show back at the Allston rock club this Friday (March 16) with Marcela Cruz and Garth. Soundtracking the signal boost is the Roxbury native’s ‘HOODxAIR,’ another airy alt-r&B track that glides along under the phantom sounds and soul of a vinyl record’s crackle. The philosophical passion Balloon is becoming quickly known for is on high display here, offering a laid-back look off his October EP Flourish. A new record is due soon, so Friday at Great Scott we’ll likely get a mix of soon-to-be hits both fresh and familiar. And you can be the one sending messages to your friends who are missing out.
