Oscars 2018 Winners and Losers: ‘Shape of Water’ wins Best Picture

It was a bad night to be a gambler, given that all the favorites won from nearly all the major categories, but this year's Academy Awards was a great night for those who hated a certain film named Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water took home Best Picture while del Toro himself won Best Director, Frances McDormand won best actress and delivered a speech that was undoubtedly of her own creation, and Sam Rockwell and Allison Janney completed their near-sweep of the supporting performer categories. There were other bright spots as well, namely that the GOAT Roger Deakins finally won himself an Oscar for his Blade Runner 2049 cinematography after losing 14 times prior, and that Jordan Peele won Best Original Screenplay for Get Out. Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk swept technical categories, and Pixar's Coco took home two awards (Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song).

However, Jonny Greenwood, Willem Dafoe, Laurie Metcalf, Agnes Varda and Sufjan Stevens were robbed, Gary Oldman won Best Actor, and we now can also say the words "Oscar Winner Kobe Bryant," with those last two honorees seeming to undercut the progressive nature of this year's ceremony. At least they didn't fuck up Best Picture this year!
