Editors raise the sonics on ‘Hallelujah (So Low)’’: New Sounds

Earlier this year we were treated to an onslaught of Editors news. The Birmingham guitar-rock band would return March 9 with a new album titled Violence, a North American tour would deliver them to Boston to play The Paradise Rock Club on May 16, and Tom Smith and the lads would take part in The Cure’s massive 40th anniversary show July 7 in London alongside Interpol, Goldfrapp, Ride, Slowdive and others.

This week Editors return with a new track and video for Violence’s latest single, ‘”Hallelujah (So Low)’,” which was premiered on Radio 1 as Annie Mac’s Hottest Record In The World. Don’t be fooled by the track’s gentle intro.

“I wrote the words to ‘‘Hallelujah (So Low)’’ when I got back from a trip with Oxfam, visiting refugee camps in Northern Greece,” Smith says. “It was obviously an incredibly moving trip, seeing people living in dust, surviving only on the help of others was very moving. Musically the track hung on the relationship between the acoustic guitar and the drum machine, that was part of the track from my demo, it had something special very early on… then when Justin came up with his outrageous guitar riff we knew we had a winner. It’’s the most “rock” we’’ve ever been and it’s exhilarating. I think the video attempts to capture this intensity, both in the track and in us as a live band.’”
