Just watch this, before we even write down any thoughts.
Jesus christ, Flying Lotus, why’d you have to make us all go out and get Shudder subscriptions this week?
Seriously though, Steve Ellison’s debut feature Kuso just looks ballsy and crazy in all the right ways, like we’re watching a less-scuzzy Alejandro Jodorowsky have a massive grand-mal seizure after snorting pure uncut Adult Swim as ambulance sirens get louder and louder in the distance. Kuso’s already generated its fair share of controversy, as it caused a walkout at Sundance and a bunch of hyperbolic Variety headlines.
We can’t wait to watch this.
Here’s a synopsis: “Broadcasting through a makeshift network of discarded televisions, Kuso depicts the aftermath of Los Angeles’s worst earthquake nightmare. Viewers travel between screens and aftershocks into the twisted lives of the survived, experiencing a hallucination that is half-Cronenberg, half-Ren & Stimpy. The debut film from acclaimed producer and rapper Flying Lotus, Kuso is a blistering, fever dream of filmmaking that uses music, special effects and animation to take a unique look at the dark history of America.”
Kuso hits the horror streaming service Shudder on July 21.
