Don’t let this cute cat distract you from the brutality of I am become Death’s ‘Victims’

Studio 52 is a community artist space located in the heart of Allston, and is proud to support the Boston music scene and local artist community.

Press photos for hardcore punk bands usually go one of two ways — either a bunch of angry-looking folk standing tall n’ strong out somewhere in the urban wild, or a blurry “live action” shot to show just how chaotic their shows are. Boston’s I am become Death have had the latter floating around recently, heading each post and premiere hyping tracks off their upcoming new record, this Friday’s Unfortunate Anthems and Songs of No Hope.

So we’re shaking it up a bit, at the request of frontman Kyle Neeson. “I don’t like the picture that like every outlet uses,” he wrote on Facebook this week, “why can’t they use one of me with cats or dogs?”

Say no more, fam.

This morning, following their May look as a Studio 52 featured artist, Vanyaland is thrilled to offer another cut off I am become Death’s new LP, a distorted monster ripper of a joint called “Victims.” Don’t let that cute and seemingly friendly cat take anything away from just how ferocious this shit is. Because, in a way, running a cat photo with this spotlight speaks to the track’s core values.

“Our song ‘Victims’ takes on conformity, submission, and the trend in our culture to go along with the status quo,” says Neeson. “The song intends to encourage ‘a breaking away,’ and choosing one’s own path, for in the end, we all end up in the ground.”

Might as well have something to pet.

Released on Magnetic Eye Records, Unfortunate Anthems and Songs of No Hope is the follow-up to the band’s 2014 eponymous debut and was recorded at Getaway Recording Studio just north of Boston. Fire up “Victims” below, check out the dark cover artwork, and pre-order the new record via Bandcamp.
