Studio 52 is a community artist space located in the heart of Allston, and is proud to support the Boston music scene and local artist community.

Ask different people to describe the sound of modern Boston, and you'll get different answers. That's why for this Saturday -- June 17, or 617 Day if you're calendar-minded -- the Boston Music Awards are pulling together two bands from opposite sides of the music spectrum for a free, all ages afternoon party at Hojoko in the Fenway.

On tap are performances from hip-hop duo STL GLD and alt-pop trio Contact, two acts that have created a lot of noise on and off the stage over the past year. Led by The Arictype and MC Moe Pope, the socially-aware STL GLD dropped one of the standout albums of 2017 in February's Torch Song, while calling action to the struggles of hip-hop in the New England music community. The shimmering, guitar-minded electronic-pop of Contact, meanwhile, has racked up more than 1.5 million plays on Spotify, and the band joined Vanyaland on a joint 'Road To Austin' road trip back in March, in advance of their set at our South-by-Southwest party with Berklee.

It's an eclectic pairing, but one that reps not only 617 but also the BMAs.

"This Saturday, we once again look forward to bringing different genres together for a Boston Music Awards event," the awards organization says in a statement. "STL GLD will bring the hip-hop, CONTACT will bring the new wave, all while celebrating the 617."

In addition to the performances, the Boston Music Awards will be opening up its Nomination Committee doors to new members as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. The BMAs are "looking for new members to help shape the nomination process and identify 2017 nominees," and those interested can apply via bostonmusicawards.com/join starting this weekend.
