We’re getting a whole lotta Lorde in our lives. And we are not mad about it.
Ramping up the promo for her upcoming sophomore album Melodrama, which finally hits a week from today (June 16), this morning Lorde has unveiled another track from the LP, the understated “Sober.” Like previous singles “Green Light” and “Perfect Places”, this track furthers Lorde’s coming of age themes, tracing a weekend of partying and the romances that flare up and fade over the course of it. It’s got a bit of a Kate Bush vibe to it, and its musical ease is deceptive; the almost-tribal rhythms tumble and turn as Lorde delivers her usual whipsmart lyricism.
“These are the games of the weekend,” Lorde offers, seemingly knowing we’re all sitting here on a Friday scanning the online listings for cool shit to do.
Lorde is spending the summer crushing the festival circuit before embarking on fall tours of Europe, Australia, and her native New Zealand. Rumors of a North American run are rampant, so stay tuned for that — in the meantime, impatient Americans can see the alt-pop queen at the following continental fests:
