Boston’s Pretty & Nice may be gone, but they certainly are not forgotten. Just last week, the band’s TV Tropes page started making the rounds, and it made us run and throw our vinyl copy of Golden Rules For Golden People back on the turntable. Fucking hell, this band was so great.
As their “indefinite hiatus” trudges on, it’s no surprise that Pretty & Nice’s former members are busy making (and helping make) various sounds for various levels of others. And now Jeremy Mendicino of Esthudio is here with his own spin, through a new electronic project called The Gifts.
Based in the town of Hardwick in Mendicino’s native Vermont, The Gifts are far more ambient and experimental than any Pretty & Nice track, and its first two songs, “Ocable” and “Maustv,” can be heard below via Bandcamp. It’s the type of stuff that demands multiple listens, and we’ve already begun peeling back the layers of all the different types of sounds Mendicino is playing with here.
We’re also told that The Gifts will bust out these minimal beats and fuses during this spring’s Waking Windows Festival in Winooski (May 5 to 7), joining a very healthy Boston-area continent of bands and artists playing the fest, like Mini Dresses, IAN SWEET, and Beeef. Waking Windows is headlined by Real Estate, Dan Deacon, !!! and others, but the undercard has just as much juice. Fire up The Gifts and scan through one iteration of the Waking Windows lineup after the Bandcamp jump.
