Year In ReView: 16 of our most favorite Providence songs of 2016

This year marked one of immense growth for the Providence music scene. New faces made their presence felt and even a new venue in Alchemy opened up to become a huge part of an already burgeoning community. Veterans staked their claim and the newbies became established while a bunch of others are well on their way to making a name for themselves. For any community to thrive, there has to be a steady influx of young people getting involved. Thankfully that is happening in Providence when it comes to local music and people are welcoming it with open arms. There's a sense of artistic excitement in the Creative Capital these days; individuals who have been involved in the music community for years are getting more and more great people involved. Shows consisting of all local bands are packing venues in every neighborhood. It's inspiring to witness and there's a lot to be positive about when it comes to the bands that call this place home. With all of this being said, here are 16 of our favorite songs to come out of Providence this year.

Eric Axelman, “Too Much Space”

Part of a new wave of musicians and bands that made themselves known within the Providence music scene this year, Eric Axelman, from hip-hop collaborative the Funk Underground, released a solo record titled Too Much in October that artistically touches upon various avenues. The chaotic and complex “Too Much Space” enters into the state of detachment. Burlington based producer Cognate creates an avant-garde beat structure while Axelman spits at a rapid fire pace. It’s a bit of a mind warp while at the same time being a mental voyage. It’s always refreshing to see an artist push the boundaries of a genre and Axelman does that in spectacular fashion on a consistent basis.
