Last month, Inspiral Carpets drummer Craig Gill died at the at the age of 44. In the weeks since, fans of the musician, who also hosted the popular Manchester Music Tour, have begun efforts to get the band’s 1994 hit “Saturn 5” to the top of the British pop charts.
Those efforts come to fruition today, December 16, as organizers of the #getsaturn5toxmasno1 campaign are asking people to stream and download the track. Proper links to purchase the song from Amazon and iTunes can be found here.
After Gill’s death, many friends and fans chimed in with memorials. Liam Gallagher tweeted: “Stunned by the news of the death of Gilly my heart goes out to his family and band members LIVE FOREVER”. Carpets keyboardist Clint Boon called Gill “the beating heart of the Inspirals in more ways than one.”
With the Manchester Music Tour, Gill provided a first-hand look at the city’s storied legacy, and his tours visited sites like Ian Curtis’ grave and the Salford Lads Club. Just last year, it was commended at the Greater Manchester Tourism Awards.
