Year In ReView: Vanyaland’s Top 25 songs of 2016

This was an odd year for music. As Vanyaland senior writer Daniel Brockman details in his annual Year In Pop roundup, the two-way highway of comings and goings produced a wealth of in-crisis pop, solemn rock, and schizophrenic hip-hop alongside a cruel abundance of iconic deaths and life-lessons from rock's dinosaur guard. And as this Vanyaland contributor list proves, it was another wildly eclectic and eccentric year of sound, proving that genre restriction is truly dead for those who still actually care. For our Top 25 Songs of 2016, we pitched and polled our writing staff about their favorite tracks of the year, then condensed each list for a composite ranking. Below are the results, with the song's nominator doing the honors of telling us why the song cracked the list in the first place. It may not be perfect, but it's ours, and it's worth more than just taking a Chance on.

17. Sunflower Bean, “Easier Said”

The languorous atmospherics that embolden Sunflower Bean’s “Easier Said,” the biggest single from the band’s debut album Human Ceremony, float between hazy dream-pop reverie and sweet harmonized lyrics. Vocalist Julia Cumming’s singing is sharp yet worry-worn; her delivery is both elliptically pretty yet sensually numb. Drummer Jacob Faber and guitarist Nick Kivlen effortlessly construct solid lo-fi dissonance to punctuate Cumming’s predawn haze. The result: a sublime song complete with impeccable phrasing, an addictive chorus, and a charm that’s both aching and amiable. Lyrically speaking, simplicity is key in keeping “Easier Said” afloat: “Trying to run but I can’t when it’s in my head/Should have just stayed home when I’d rather be alone instead/You’re getting old, so act your age/It isn’t fun to make the same mistakes.” That kind of cognizance and self awareness run rampant throughout Human Ceremony, but is best crystallized on “Easier Said.” And it is for those reasons that “Easier Said” is one of 2016’s most necessary songs.
