Last night a few headlines started popping up announcing a new single from the Smiths. And following the news that guitarist Johnny Marr reveals in his new memoir that he and Morrissey briefly discussed a reunion over a few drinks several years ago, there was initially some overjoyed panic.
Could this be the start of reunion fever?
Maybe, but probably not.
The Smiths will release a new 7-inch, but it is composed of two familiar songs in previously unheard styles. As Morrissey fansite True to You reports, the single — which does not have a release date — features a demo cut of 1985 single “The Boy With the Thorn in His Side” and an unreleased version of “Rubber Ring.” It will be released by Warner UK.
The cover art, showing Salford actor Albert Finney, was designed by Morrissey himself. Gaze at it below.
