Beyond Rowling: Fantastic film beasts, and where to stream them

We’re excited to finally watch Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the latest entry in J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter franchise (by the way, is it even okay to call it that when the movie’s set 70 years before he was born?). The film hits theaters Friday, and its focus on magical monsters and mischief got us thinking: What other creature features are able to stream online through the familiar services? Though we're past Halloween season and creepy critters have, for the most part, gone back under the beds of our imagination, we found eight great movies that we hope you’ll enjoy taking a peek at from the comfort of your home. Maybe you'll stuff one or two deep within the pockets of your mind before you head to the theater this weekend.

Lilo and Stitch

This 2002 cartoon features some of the best alien designs we’ve seen in modern animation, and its Hawaiian setting (believe it or not, it was the first Disney movie to use watercolor backgrounds since Dumbo) gives it a sense of fun and flavor that few other of the Mouse’s movies have ever been able to match. Lilo and Stitch is the classic tale of an Elvis-obsessed girl and her dog, or a girl and her escaped alien mutant who just happens to look like a dog when he doesn’t have all six of his arms out. We wanted to include one or two family-friendly options on this list (we realize that a movie about an anal polyp coming to life might not be the best option for our readers with children) and you’d be hard-pressed to find a better one.
