Three years ago this month, Boston rock and soul dynamo Barrence Whitfield and the Savages crashed British television sets with a raucous performance of “Corner Man” on the BBC’s esteemed Later… With Jools Holland. Whitfield and the band’s company was impressive that day, as the episode also featured performances by the Pixies, CHVRCHES, and Janelle Monáe, as well as an appearance by House actor Hugh Laurie.
Tonight, Barrence Whitfield and the Savages play ONCE Ballroom in Somerville with Diablogato (an inspired pairing of bullshit-free Massachusetts bands), so we figured we’d dust off the old Vimeo machine and re-post the group’s blitzing performance.
The episode, oddly enough, has gotten a ton of play here in the United States in the last year or so, as it was broadcast a handful of times on weekend mornings on Palladia, the music channel that has since evolved into MTV Live. We have no idea if they still play episodes of Later… With Jools Holland, so save yourself some troubles and revisit Whitfield’s passion via the clip below, and then go see the real deal tonight in Somerville.
