We live in strange times. Everyone with guitars is a garage rock band even though few bands play in garages anymore, and all DJs still “spin” even though vinyl and compact discs have vacated their computerized technique. Boston’s Mercury on Mars have righted the ship, at least for one video, putting the band back in the garage and putting a new kind of spin on their new single “Rock Bottom”.
In advance of their appearance and record-release party on Saturday at ONCE Somerville’s Your Friends Fest (peep our official preview here), the rock quartet have released a cool 360-degree video for their latest single. The track helps introduce us to their new EP Human Race/Hyperspace, which officially hits streets both digital and asphalt come tomorrow.
“The idea came together pretty quickly,” Mercury on Mars’ Dave Scott tells Vanyaland. “We just wanted the easiest way to capture us playing the song, but not the same old thing. That turned out to be an iPhone zip-tied to a wood block on a rotating disco ball base, and the garage had a lot of cool junk in it. We figured the changing clothes thing would break it up a bit and let us cut loose creatively. Lyrically, Steve’s got a lot of really great, heavy stuff on the record about the light and dark side of everyday life, so we made the video kinda lighthearted.”
Watch the video below, swandive into the entire Ocelot Records EP via Bandcamp, and get pumped for Your Friends Fest, which will also feature performances by The Knock Ups, Rrrright?, Thrust Club, Psychic Dog, and a bunch of other vendors, artists, and smiling faces.
