Outside the Box is back on the Boston Common this summer, and whether you like it or not, they’re bringing egg-eating ’90s hit machine Smash Mouth to the party.
The free, all-ages, all-inclusive music and arts festival goes down July 13 to 17. “It’s a celebration of performing arts in our city like no other,” says Outside the Box managing director Susan Shields Darian. “[A] melding of arts culture and innovation that makes the city so exceptional.”
In a press conference on the Common Monday morning that began with a dance routine from StreetHYpE, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh and the fest organizers revealed some of the participating bands and artists.
Joining Smash Mouth this summer will be American Idol’s Daughtry, New York multi-media performer Kaki King, Brooklyn Bhangra party crew Red Baraat, and others. Additional performers will be revealed in the next few weeks. One name we did recognize as organizers listed off other participants was 2016 Rock and Roll Rumble band Analog Heart.
In his opening remarks, Walsh says the festival is a “cornerstone of commitment” to the city’s arts culture.
The five-day festival will also feature performances that include music, theatre, dance, spectacle arts, magic, and arts education, as well as launch OTB Interactive, described in a press release as “a celebration of Boston’s entrepreneurial and creative spirit.”
More to come.
