All Systems: Listen to Kristin Kontrol’s mystical new electronic-pop single ‘(Don’t) Wannabe’

By now we’re all very familiar with Kristin Kontrol, the new evolutionary synth-pop rebirth from Kristin “Dee Dee” Welchez of Dum Dum Girls. In March we were seduced by glitzy debut single “X-Communicate”, maybe the most perfect pop song of 2016, and a few weeks ago felt the synth-sax seduction from the more subdued follow-up, “Show Me”. Now, as we draw closer to the May 27 release date for Kristin Kontrol’s debut album, X-Communicate, the musician has released another single, and it falls somewhere between the first two.

The track is called “(Don’t) Wannabe”, and it’s another new wave throbber that you probably would have listened to while doing your hair and make-up before heading to a club called Tech Noir back in 1983. There’s a sweet innocence to the song, and while her previous work has reminded us of our favorite early-’80s electronic-pop artists, this one is giving us some dramatic Kate Bush vibes plucked straight from the cherry-end of the decade.

This all adds up to what is certain to be one of the best releases of the year.

Those in the Northeast will have a chance to hear these songs in live action next month, when Kristin Kontrol plays five shows in the Northeast, including the Middle East in Cambridge on June 17. New England gets additional love on two dates: June 16 at 3S Artspace in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and June 18 at the Met in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. A June 22 show at Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn closes out the mini-run, but we’re told more dates across the country will be revealed between now and then.
