There’s a big David Bowie memorial concert going down tonight at Carnegie Hall in New York City, and when we say big, we mean big. Just take a look at the run of show below, posted a few minutes ago to Instagram by Sean Ono Lennon.
This is some list. Cyndi Lauper doing “Suffragette City”? The Pixies doing “Cactus” (a song that Bowie himself covered often)? Michael Stripe doing “Ashes To Ashes” in a bold attempt to top his recent take of “The Man Who Sold The World”?
The Duke will be proud.
Lennon will perform with J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr., and it’s interesting to note that the Pixies are set to go on after the Roots, who bailed on the show over a dispute over a shared drum kit.
The Duke would be bummed.
Tickets to the event, obviously, are sold out, but there are reports that tomorrow night’s second show, at Radio City Music Hall, will be streamed on Skype. The tributes were originally planned before Bowie’s death on January 10 after an undisclosed battle with cancer.
“The unexpected death of David Bowie has turned this tribute, which we have worked on for the past seven months, into a memorial concert,” declares the show’s website, via Playbill. “While the series has featured surprise appearances and performances of honorees several times in the past, this year’s concert will certainly be remembered as a poignant celebration of his music by his friends, peers and fans. We are all deeply saddened by this news. The timing of our public on-sale date is bizarre in its timing and the show is taking on many more emotions. RIP David and may God’s love be with you.”
Proceeds will benefit the following charities serving underprivileged youth: Grammy In the Schools, Young Audiences New York, Church Street School for Music and Art, and The American Symphony Orchestra.
