‘He made Blackstar for us, his parting gift’: The world says goodbye to David Bowie

This morning the world was rocked by the news of the death of David Bowie. The legendary music and fashion icon passed away yesterday after an 18-month battle with cancer, just two days after his 69th birthday and the release of his 26th studio album, Blackstar.

“He always did what he wanted to do,” writes longtime producer Tony Visconti. “And he wanted to do it his way and he wanted to do it the best way. His death was no different from his life — a work of Art. He made Blackstar for us, his parting gift. I knew for a year this was the way it would be. I wasn’t, however, prepared for it. He was an extraordinary man, full of love and life. He will always be with us. For now, it is appropriate to cry.”

The tributes, understandably, have been plentiful, even as news starts to circulate here on the East Coast. Here are some of the responses, reactions, and reflections offered up on Twitter, from those in the Boston music scene and the massive community of fans and admirers around the world.
