5. Speedy Ortiz, “Raising The Skate” [Carpark Records]
The r&b-flavored “Puffer” might be the best (and most unexpected) track on this spring’s Foil Deer LP, but we can forget the feeling of euphoria when the album’s first single, “Raising The Skate,” dropped in May. A heavy, sludgy guitar-rock jam with a brazen sense of weightlessness, it took the Massachusetts band and set them on a national pedestal, cast away on one very cool baaaaa-ooot.
