10. Toro y Moi, “Empty Nesters” [Carpark Records]
“Empty Nesters” is part existentialism, part nostalgic throwback that’s all too perfect for a sun-soaked afternoon at Revere Beach or a top-down, feet-out-the-window drive along Mass Ave. Chaz Bundick layers dreamy vocals — “Smothered and covered by my high school dreams / Call mom and daddy ‘cause the nest is empty / And so are you” — over Talking Heads-inspired guitar breaks, and he goes heavy on the hooks. A departure from Toro y Moi’s previous work, and a song ready made for a sweaty flash mob in the State Street MBTA station, “Empty Nesters” is what got me through all of the temperamental September weather in Boston.
