This past year marked an exciting upswing in the pop music landscape. Suddenly, pop’s boundaries began expanding, conflating, confusing, and blurring lines between what was funky, what was dance, and what was everything else. For the first time since the ‘90s did it feel socially acceptable to admit to listening to songs on the radio again. Actually, Major Lazer and DJ Snakes’ “Lean On” and Skrillex and Diplo’s “Where Are U Now?” brought a lot of that credibility back, and I’m forever grateful. I never thought I’d be thanking Justin Bieber for a job well done. Ever the pop fan, I’ve been unashamedly singing karaoke versions of Katy Perry songs since high school. That said, my relationship with pop music has waxed and waned throughout the years, and I know a great hook when I hear one. But damn — there as never a better time to be a fan of pop music than in 2015. Many of the songs released this year could very well stand the test of time, particularly the ones that were not serviced as singles. The same can’t be said for some of pop’s past. Exciting, experimental and unashamed, below is a top 10 list of my favorite pop songs from 2015.
