6. Deafheaven, New Bermuda [Anti-]

In 2013’s brilliant black metal opus Sunbather, Deafheaven stared into the abyss of the opulence, decadence, and incidental nihilism of upper-crust Californians without a hint of irony. Lyricist George Clarke may not have envied rich people, but probably held some degree of aesthetic interest at the time. However, that was back when he was really poor. Now, here we have New Bermuda — a record by a globally successful band, who went out and bought some of the fancy shit that they once figured would make their lives easier, only to find themselves immediately disillusioned with fancy shit and therefore even angrier than they were before they had any fancy shit. Probably, Clarke is no longer aesthetically interested in rich people, but at least his band can still melt everyone’s dick off.
