Usually, when Anngelle Wood books a show, the bands are playing for rock and roll glory. This week, they’ll be playing for the good of children.
The curator of the annual Rock and Roll Rumble and host of local radio show Boston Emissions on WZLX 100.7 FM leads a fundraising charge this Wednesday night at ONCE Lounge in Somerville. The performance space inside Cuisine En Locale, not too far from Davis and Porter squares, is the site of the 4th annual Spectacular Gift Drive, a benefit for the DCF Kids Fund, and features a lineup of Walter Sickert & the ARmy of BRoken TOys, the Lemon Merchant Allstars (featuring members of Aloud and OldJack), Goddamn Glenn and His Red Cup Ensemble (boasting members of Parlour Bells, The Pretty Boys, and The Static Dynamic), Los Texicanos, Axemunkee, and The Knock Ups (led by Gretchen Shae, who performed on-stage with U2 earlier this year).
Organizers of the party are collecting unwrapped gifts for children currently in foster care, a cause dear to Wood’s heart.
“What few know about me is that I was a foster parent,” Wood tells Vanyaland. “I understand that these kids have been through more in their young lives than we could imagine. The families who take them in need all the help and support that we can offer.”
By combining music with charitable events, it gives everyone a reason to rock out for a good cause.
“This show will serve as means to celebrate the season, enjoy music and merriment, and bring friends together,” Wood adds. “I appreciate each and every performer on this show. Some reached out to me, others had no hesitation when asked to play a Wednesday night show the week before Christmas. That’s Boston, though. They always come through…. We need some good times. Good times, doing good things. That is the Christmas spirit.”
